NEW : Gudberg Verlag, Hamburg - presents Alex Diamond, Dont Worry Bout A Thing on GoSee
Hamburg-based publisher GUDBERG is new at GoSee. They stand for exceptional publications in Urban Culture and Urban Art. The publisher evolved out of the creative agency of the same name, which specialised in the fields of editorial design, corporate design and illustration. We hereby present their publication ‘Alex Diamond, Don't Worry Bout a Thing’.
"If I would come from anywhere, it would be Lost Vegas, which is a tiny place behind the right cerebral hemisphere. Just dust, sand and sun; nothingness really. No past, just a present and future, that's why I was never born and will never die." (Alex Diamond)
In 2004, the artist first broke out in the scene with his solo exhibition ‘Alex Diamond's strange sofa’ in the Hamburg gallery heliumcowboy artspace. Even then, he juggled with the allure of anonymity and the option to recreate oneself as an artist over and over again.
He continued to tackle the same issues in further solo exhibitions, which also took place at heliumcowboy artspace and manifested his name in the contemporary art world by collaborating and participating at important group exhibitions and art fairs such as the VOLTA 05 and Scope in NY and Miami.
Yet, who might lurk behind the pseudonym has been a mystery to the audience ever since, even though the artist constantly hits the stage wearing a mask made of tentacles and hair, he keeps evolving and mutating into new bodies and characters.
The book ‘Don't worry bout a thing (being Alex Diamond)’ shows his newest oeuvres, which at the same time exhibit the results of his project study of the same name. In this study, the artist tackles the question of reality, the mechanism of self-creation, the power of the ego, social roles, as well as the dance of self-reflection and how we are perceived by others, spiced up with a form of schizophrenia, which seems to be almost natural.
His approximately 40 works combine photography and fine art – referred to by the artist himself as “photopainting”. They depict how Alex slips into various forms of changing bodies, takes on different personalities and thus keeps reinventing himself. The very mask that became his trademark however always covers his face.
‘Don’t worry ‘bout a thing (Being Alex Diamond)’ clarifies that Alex is in possession of an artistic freedom which is seldom granted to other contemporary artists. Not touchable as a person, Alex Diamond is more of a fantastical creature, a projection rather than a real person.
His art deals with the work and the presentation itself, art for art's sake, which exists independent and autarkic of personality. Alex Diamond lives through the art he creates and vice versa and would be better described as an artistic concept rather than a person.
This gives him the opportunity to become reborn again and again, not to be trapped in an artistic category or style, letting go of a personality cult, which is so prevalent in the art scene. Therefore, he manages once again, via ‘Don't worry about a thing (Being Alex Diamond’ to retain his never-ending superhero status.
