Andreas Herzau: Haiti - one year on. A film for WELTHUNGERHILFE.
On January the 12th, 2010 Haiti fell victim to an earthquake, which destroyed large parts of the island. It has been a whole year since the devastating earthquake. Over 230,000 people died, countless people were made homeless and lost their families and friends. How are the people faring today? What kind of a picture does their future paint?
Photographer Andreas HERAZ c/o KATINKA KRIEGER travelled to the Caribbean island for World Famine Relief (Welthungerhilfe). His audio slide flags up the problems but also the hope, it enables the people who are tirelessly working on a new start, in the face of all setbacks to have say their say.
World Faminine Relief supports the Haitians on a long-term and sustainable basis to aid their new starts. More information, personal stories and blogs are all available on www.welthungerhilfe.de.
World Famine Relief’s work focuses on the rebuilding of rural areas in the South of Port-au-Prince, which suffers from a scarcity of charities and supporting organisations. “We must make sure we provide the local people with a perspective – in their home villages, where their families live and they can cultivate land and stay close to their roots. It is the only way we can prevent them from wandering off into the already overpopulated cities. It would make their already grim situation take a turn for the worse without a doubt”, says Bärbel Dieckmann, president of World Famine Relief.
