Neverland Lost - a somewhat different Michael Jackson portrait by Henry Leutwylerat
Just before Michael Jackson’s death, Henry Leutwyler photographed boxes full of objects and clothing that were removed from the artist’s self created and brutally desecrated refuge; Neverland Ranch, California.
The resulting series documents the inner unrest of a person that was always in the spotlight and privately dreamed of a life like Peter Pan’s – a child that never wanted to grow up.
The objects include oil paintings, stage costumes such as diamante gloves and unique models from the Wizard of Oz.
Photographer Henry Leutwyler portrays people through their property, through the objects that surround them.
The title of visual archaeologist seems adequate. His still lifes are undramatically lit; yet, they still conceal more intimacy than the surface lets on at first glance.
The Swiss photographer lives in New York and has won multiple awards. His work has been published in magazines such as New York Time Magazine, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Esquire and Fortune.
‘Neverland Lost’ is a monograph in cooperation with Steidl Verlag and is on show at M+B Gallery, Los Angeles until 14 August.
